Please do complain about news coverage that’s inaccurate or biased on sex and gender. Editors don’t like it, and if we don’t like their copy, we should tell them.
Here’s how to let them know what you think.
Complain to IPSO
IPSO is the Independent Press Standards Regulator. Most newspapers in the UK are voluntary signatories. The main exceptions are the Guardian, Mail Online, Metro UK and the Financial Times. We have a separate blog on what to expect when you complain to IPSO here.
You can complain to IPSO without complaining to the publication first. However complaints to the publication will function as a more direct and efficient mode of feedback, and you can still complain to IPSO at the same time or if you aren’t satisfied with the response.
Here’s the list of publications that are regulated by IPSO.
Sky News
Complain to Sky News here
It directs you to this email address: viewerR@sky.uk
This email news@skynews.com is also available but while your comment may be seen, it won’t be registered as a formal complaint.
You can go straight to Ofcom here. You don’t have to complain to Sky first.
Complain to ITV
For ITV it is probably best to go straight to Ofcom on this page. There’s no straightforward process for complaining about news through its own website. Unlike the BBC, you don’t have to complain to ITV first.
Complain to Channel 4
Again, you can go straight to Ofcom, but Channel 4 has a complaints form here
Complain to the BBC
It can be complex and time consuming. But here is our blog on how to do it and what to expect.
Complain to GB News
Feedback is very easy - gbviews@gbnews.com
You can also complain direct to Ofcom without going to GBNews first.
Complain to the Guardian
Use this email address: guardian.readers@theguardian.com
Here you will find the Guardian’s editorial code and a list of complaints that the Guardian won’t consider.
Complain to the Daily Mail
This is the email for factual inaccuracies: corrections@mailonline.co.uk
Use this form for complaints under IPSO rules
You can complain directly to IPSO here without going to the Daily Mail first. However if IPSO accepts this to be a complaint it can consider under its regulations, IPSO will send it back to the Daily Mail first for a response.
Complain to the Press Association
You may not know whether the copy you’re looking at has come from PA - it is used by almost all newspapers - but sometimes it’s tagged ‘PA’ instead of a byline. You can email the newsdesk on this address: copy@pa.media. and this is their process.
PA is also a voluntary signatory to IPSO and you can take your complaint to the regulator - in whichever publication you saw the copy. But IPSO isn’t obliged to consider it.
Complain to the Independent
Use this form to complain, even though it says ‘Submit a request’. It’s definitely the complaints form.
Complain to the Metro
For accuracy - use this email: correct@ukmetro.co.uk. To make a formal complaint under IPSO rules please use this form
Complain to The Times
Complaints about editorial matters can be sent to feedback@thetimes.co.uk
If you want to make a complaint under IPSO rules use this form
Here’s their complaints guidance.
Complain to the Telegraph
The Telegraph complaints form is here
Complain to Reuters
Again you may not know that the copy you’re reading comes from Reuter: however it has a news website here.
This is the form for complaints.
Please do complain about news coverage that’s inaccurate or biased on sex and gender. It’s not the only way of telling them what we think - social media, clicks, scrolling and engagement, subscriptions and shares also send a message. But complaints make them work at defending their position. However complacent editors are - they do not enjoy complaints, and they especially don’t enjoy a lot of them.
Happy hunting !
